Traveling to the Woods

The Biscuit fire perimeter is huge and the country is rugged. This is a wild place with timber sales scattered across hundreds of square miles. The Forest Service is not clearly marking the areas that are being auctioned for logging. Before you travel to the woods get two sets of maps. The first is the Siskiyou National Forest map. It is available in both camping and map stores and at Forest Service offices. A gazetteer is no substitute.

Next you will need the more detailed maps of specific logging units. These are available from Forest Service offices in Gold Beach, Galice, Cave Junction and Medford. You can receive them in person or by mail. Call the Forest Service at 541-858-2301 for more information.

The first five sales Indie, Berry, Fiddler, Flat Top and Cedar are available now. The second six additional sales, Horse, Steed, Chetco, Briggs, Hobson, and Lazy are expected in mid-July.

By mid-July a base camp in the Burn may be operational.
